10 Tips for Machine Safety from EHS
- Never remove or try to overcome machine safeguards.
- Don’t create new hazards by allowing objects to fall into moving parts or by creating a new pinch point.
- Report problems with machine safety products to your supervisor immediately.
- Never leave machines unattended with parts still moving. Be aware that parts may continue to move after the machine has been turned off.
- Guards may be removed only when the machine has been locked out and tagged out.
- Ideally machine parts would be lubricated without removing the safeguard. If that is not possible, turn the machine off and lock it out before lubricating.
- Only operate machines when guards are in place and properly adjusted.
- Do not use unauthorized or damaged guards.
- Do not wear loose clothing, jewelry, or long hair around machines – these increase the risk of employee injury.
- Ask a supervisor or safety specialist if you have any questions about machine safety or how to work with these products.
