CBT's Got Heart

Published: Mar 20 2018

Every year CBT sponsors employees and their families to participate in Cincinnati’s Heart Mini Event hosted by the American Heart Association. This past weekend over 30,000 registrants come together to participate in the city’s largest single-day fundraiser and hometown favorite for 40+ years.

CBT had 37 participants in the 5K race and walk, but the event has a host of activities for all age ranges including a half marathon, 15K race, 2K kids race, 1K steps for stroke, Kid’s Fun Run and more! The Heart Mini is a great way to bring our CBT family and Cincinnati community together to fight the disease that claims more lives each year than all forms of cancer and Chronic Lower Respiratory Disease combined.

Tips to Prevent Heart Disease:

1. Eat a Diet of Healthy, Whole Foods

– Limit consumption of saturated fat, trans fat, and sodium

– Incorporate a serving of green vegetables into each meal

– Reduce sugar intake and red meat consumption

2. Get Moving!

– The AHA suggests at least 150 minutes per week of moderate exercise OR 75 minutes of vigorous exercise

– Aim for a goal of 30 minutes a day, five days a week

– Physical activity is anything that gets you moving and burns calories – find something you enjoy!

– Don’t underestimate walking. Walking can be a great way to be active throughout the day

3. Drop the Cigarettes

– Smoking is the most important and preventable cause of premature death in the United States

– Smokers have a higher risk of developing many chronic disorders, which can lead to coronary heart disease and stroke

– Avoid secondhand smoke – According to a U.S. Surgeon General report, nonsmokers are up to 30 percent more likely to develop heart disease or lung cancer from secondhand smoke exposure at home or work

4. Visit Your Doctor Regularly

– Start heart-health screenings now

– Complete yearly wellness exams

– Discuss any concerns about physical activity, diet, weight, cholesterol, etc. with your doctor

– Start with preventative care now and protect yourself in the long run
